PROGRAM

Educational Outcomes

Advances in medical treatment have increased survival rates dramatically for children, adolescents, and young adults (CAYA) with cancer, resulting in a growing population of long-term survivors in the education system. Survivors of CAYA cancers are at risk for lower educational achievement, delays in completing their education, and a higher likelihood of repeating a grade compared to their peers. Consequently, their ability to achieve their academic and vocational goals and thrive as productive members of society may be significantly compromised.

The Educational Outcomes Program aims to identify barriers to academic success for CAYA cancer survivors, including treatment-related cognitive and physical impairments, socio-economic disparities, and challenges for reintegrating into school during and post treatment. Key goals include developing targeted interventions, enhancing academic and psycho-social support, and establishing evidence-based policies to improve survivors’ long-term educational and career opportunities.
