Incidence and Mortality Trends in Childhood Cancer in British Columbia, 1971-2020

A Project of the Childhood, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancer Survivors (CAYACS) Program

Childhood cancers, though rare, remain the leading cause of disease-related deaths in Canadian children aged 0 to 14. This project analyzes the incidence and mortality trends of childhood cancers in BC over five decades using data from the BC Cancer Registry and the CAYACS database from 1971 to 2020. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) and mortality rates (ASMR) are calculated. Trends are analyzed through Jointpoint regression, reporting Average Annual Percentage Change (AAPC) and Annual Percentage Change (APC). The study aims to generate comprehensive insights into childhood cancer trends in BC, identifying areas for focused research and interventions to improve outcomes and reduce the burden of childhood cancers.
